In order to secure the electronic components on a pcb made out of paper there is a range of materials that are appropriate for every case according to the requirements. These include conductive tape (copper / aluminum tape), conductive paint, pastes (silver paste). Small pieces of wire and the component pins can be used as tracks themselves. For the purposes of these projects conductive glue is selected as it can be easily made out of relatively safe to handle materials that are readily available. It can be applied with ease and it provides a secure connection. This glue depends on the conductive properties of graphite suitable to complete the connections in the circuits and attach the electronic components on the pcbs made out of paper.

Raw materials such as glue, paint and graphite powder must only be handled by the parent. Keep them away from children. Read the instructions and precautions on your supplies carefully.

Do not inhale or eat any of the substances utilised. Avoid contact with the skin. The mixture can stain clothes and other items. Handle with care.




Mix equal amounts (by volume) of acrylic paint and graphite powder in a spare pot. Slowly add the powder to the paint and mix well. Use a light color paint to make it easier to ensure everything is mixed evenly, transfer the mixture to a dispenser such as a small plastic bottle or an empty syringe.





The resistance of this paste is relatively large and its value depends on the exact characteristics of the materials used. This limits its application when used as a conductor.  The conductivity of this mixture increases as the acrylic paint drys. Usually these simple LED circuits light up several minutes after the glue is applied and get their maximum brightness after a few hours, when the paint has set completely. This adds to the magic of the phenomena involved.


 Further work


Improve existing lantern designs and produce new models. Investigate science involved in materials and methods utilised such as product design, final use, user interaction, aesthetics, construction, electrical and electronic engineering. Consider safety during construction and usage. Propose new solutions. If not already familiar conduct research on the main principles.
